The sliding contact shoe for collection of current for a rail vehicle running on a three rail electrified railway system is carried on a mechanism which is mounted in rotation about a longitudinal axis. This allows the shoe to turn through 90 degrees, allowing the shoe to maintain contact with either a horizontal or a vertical face on the supply rail. The contact shoe carrier is of an electrically isolating material and may be designed as an articulated mechanism allowing transverse displacement, or as a flexible mount, and may have travel limit stops fitted. The positioning of the shoe is by a hydraulic cylinder working against a spring.
