The signboard (10) is mounted onto the surface of a carrier (5) and is retained by a clamping strip (7). The carrier is located within vertical guideways and may be moved by a belt drive (19) coupled to a toothed belt drive (16) from a motor. The carrier is secured to the belt by a carriage (23) with rollers (41) that run against back plate. The front console (8) has a keyboard that allows the alpha numeric data to be printed to be entered. The data is displayed on a VDU at the top of the unit (3). The matrix printer (11) is mounted on a carriage that runs on guides (121). A motor drive unit (24) allows the carriage to be moved horizontally. A combination of vertical and horizontal motions allows the characters to be reproduced.
