The underground shelter for protection in conventional warfare comprises a tubular steel chamber (1) the longitudinal axis of which is horizontal. The chamber is air and water-tight and is placed in the bottom of a trench (4) prior to being coated with concrete (2) which is resistant to the expected external pressures. The chamber is fitted out with all the equipment necessary for human survival during manufacture to ensure installation and good reliability once installed.
