A light source directs a beam of light on to the head of a user who stands on a scale platform 11. Light from the top of the user's head is reflected towards a vertical mirror 9 arranged adjacent a circuit board 10 providing a height-measuring scale. A sensor 7, movable relative to the board 10 by means of a motor G, can be positioned to receive the reflected light from mirror 9. When light is received, a motor drive circuit controlled by the sensor 7 stops the motor G, and sliding contacts 8 which travel along the circuit board 10 as the sensor moves are used to determine the position of the sensor relative to the scale. A digital indication of height corresponding to that scale position is then provided to give the user his height. A suitable weighing scale may also be incorporated in the apparatus to provide a digital indication of weight to the user. IMAGE
