PURPOSE:To renew the entire circumference in a short work period without requiring temporally installation of towers, etc. in the stage of renewing the shell of a self-standing type blast furnace over the entire circumference in its circumferential direction by renewing the shell in each of the divided sections successively while allowing only the shells that withstand the load of the furnace body to remain. CONSTITUTION:For example, the entire circumference of the shell of a furnace bottom 4 is so determined as to divide the same to 8 pieces of divided segments (a)-(h). Here, the shell is divided within the safe strength in design strength so that even if the two divided sections are removed the shell withstands the load of the furnace body with the remaining sections. First, the sections (a), (e) are removed and new shells are welded to the sections (a), (e) to renew said sections. Thereafter, the old shells of the sections (b), (f), then the sections (c), (e) and sections (d), (h) are removed successively in this order, and new shells are welded thereto to renew these sections, whereby the renewing of the entire circumference is completed.
