1494340 Alkyl or aralkyl N-[2-aroylphenyl]- carbamates JOHN WYETH & BRO Ltd 3 Dec 1975 [3 Dec 1974] 52244/74 Heading C2C The invention comprises (a) a process for the preparation of alkyl or aralkyl N-[2-aroylphenyl]-carbamates by reacting a 3-aryl-2- indolinone with molecular O 2 in the presence of an alkali metal alkoxide or aralkoxide, (b) compounds of the formula wherein R is C 1 -C 6 alkyl or aryl (C 1 -C 6 ) alkyl, which may be obtained by the process given in (a) and (c) a process for the preparation of a compound of the formula by hydrolysing a compound of Formula IV above. Compounds of Formula VI are useful intermediates in the preparation of 5-aryl- 1,4-benzodiazepines. 3-Aryl-2-indolinones of the formula wherein RSP1/SP is H or (C 1 -C 6 ) alkyl, RSP2/SP and RSP3/SP are each H, halogen (C 1 -C 6 ) alkyl or alkoxy, nitro, (C 1 -C 6 ) alkylsulphonyl or alkylthio, or trihaloalkyl, and when taken together RSP2/SP and RSP3/SP are -OCH 2 O-, Ar is aryl which may be substituted or unsubstituted, may be obtained by condensing an aniline of the formula with a hydroxy-acid of formula to give a compound of formula and cyclizing the compound of Formula VII in the presence of an acid.
