A vehicle body welding system includes interchangeable holding side frames or side gates for accurately positioning multiple component parts of different vehicle bodies in relative juxtaposn. at a framing welding station. Programmable welding heads are used to weld the parts into an assembly. The side gates are movable to admit introduction of a preliminary preassembly of the parts for any of the different bodies and to clamp the parts in properly oriented configuration for welding. Programmed robots effect the welding so that all hand welding is eliminated. Retooling for a new type of body can be performed quickly. The side gates may be interchangeably employed. The welding is performed at fixed stations.
