The three piece mortise and tenon joint connects two horizontal cross members to a vertical post, the horizontal members being at right angles to one another. The joint is used to connect the horizontal members to the vertical post at some position along its length. Each horizontal member has a tenon with a vertical half slot. The port has two mortises at right angles. One mortise is 1.5 times as long as the height of the tenon. The first tenon is inserted in the top of the longer mortise with its slot facing down. The second is inserted in the second mortise with its slot facing up and is locked by a downward movement of the first tenon.
