The hoist has at its longitudinal centre a motor which couples to a transmission shaft to a reversible coupling through a pneumatic actuator. A second shaft couples to a reduction gearbox having a flywheel which can be braked by jaws acting on the flywheel. The jaws are spring loaded and are released only by pressure on a control mechanism. The reduction gearbox also drives, perpendicular to the transverse direction, a third transmission shaft with a lifting sprocket which meshes with chains running the full height of the building. An emergency brake is provided by an arm on the flywheel which extends beyond the flywheel circumference if the speed becomes excessive. The motor itself has only one direction of rotation.
