The d.c. chopper circuit of simple design has a four layer diode (3) connected to the control electrode of a thyristor (1) in series with the load (11). A capacitor (4) is charged by a resistance (5) and transistor (6) to fire the thyristor. In parallel with the charging capacitor is a quenching capacitor (7). In parallel with the path formed by the transistor, resistance and diode is a choke (10). Connected to the control input of the transistor by a comparator (13) is a current controller (14) in series with the load. One side of the charging capacitor is connected to the junction between the thyristor and the current controller. A second input of the comparator is connected to a nominal value current transmitter.
