The mechanism is intended for applying adhesive tape (5) over the edge formed by the intersection of the upper panel and a side panel of a moving box (24). It comprises a tape supply roll (4), a swivelable roller (8) to hold the leading tape end in readiness, a further swivelable roller (14) coupled (9-11) to the first roller lever (6) to hold this roller (8) lifted until the box has passed, and a swivelable cutter (21) to cut the trailing tape end. The leading end of the box first passes a brush (22) with bristles directed at the side panel. It then passes a twisted guide rail (23) which is shaped such that it folds the laterally projecting tape half against the side panel as the box moves along it.
