The train heating system is a single phase, high voltage type normally supplied from the diesel electric locomotive. To preheat the train before the journey it is coupled to a small shunting engine whose power unit can be switched from three phase frequency controlled output to the single phase supply. The shunter can operate at an economic rate to preheat the whole train so that the larger locomotive does not have to be used in an unbalanced way, and at a fraction of its capability, in which state it does not operated well and does not heat up properly.
