The alphanumerical identification method involves the use of code symbols from left to right comprising pairs of numbers, single numbers or letters, groups of letters or combinations of alphanumerical symbols. Where recurring letters are used, these are positioned furthest to the left. The system permits the separation visually of different categories of articles, such as purchased materials, intermediary products completely manufactured goods, where each category has a distinctive code letter. Sorting can also be done by computer in strict alphanumerical sequence, as A102, A20, B1245, B15, C10. An extension of the basic sorting facility is that the system provides for sorting of sub-categories within main headings. (Provisional Basic advised week 83/49).
