Microporous hollow fibre membrane for plasmapheresis - by extruding soln. contg. polyether-polycarbonate block copolymer with centre liq. into gelling liq. which slowly forms solid hollow fibre.
Microporous hollow fibre membrane (I) of hydrophilic polyetherpolycarbonate block copolymer (II) for use in plasmaphoresis is claimed in which the membrane (I) has a symmetrical wall structure with smoothly rounded pore openings without sharp edges. Also claimed is a process for making (I) by extruding a soln. of (II) in the form of a hollow fibre (III) and then gelling and opt. washing the fibre. (I) has a pore dia. of 0.008-0.8 pref. 0.5 microns, a porosity of above 65 pref. 80-85% and a thickness of 20-300 pref. 100 micron. (II) comprises bisphenol A/polyalkylene oxide polycondensate of formula (A) where R is CH2CH2 or combinations of CH2-CH=CH and CH=CH pref. CH2CH2, m=40-100, pref. 80, n=10-155 pref. 152 and p=0.5-3 pref. 1. (I) has a wide cutt off and relatively high filtration rates and the pore openings do not cause hemolysis when used to separate plasma from blood cells.
