The process comprises prepn., for extrusion, by melting, of branching polymer compound on to an electrical lead, for branching through exposure to radiation in the presence of at least one suitable agent. To increase efficiency, the compound is a fluorocarbonated polymer melting at below 200 deg.C. - The compound is also an electrical insulator.
