The use of chlorine and other chemicals for the disinfection of water is avoided by irradiation with UV light in the wavelength range of 254 mu m. The apparatus comprises the rigid PVC irradiation tube (1), equipped with the internal reflector (12), having a concentrically fitted quartz protection tube (3) for receiving the UV irradiation lamp (10), the sockets (11) and starter unit housing (16) of which are attached to the irradiation tube (1), resulting in a compact installation. By means of tangentially arranged inlet and outlet ports (2), a spiral-shaped water flow (W), and thus a longer residence time and intensification of the disinfection of water, is achieved. IMAGE
