Novel acid halide or acyllactam functional materials are of formula (I)-(III) (where A is halogen (pref. Cl or Br) or gp. (IV) where Y is 3-11C alkylene; R1 is alkyl, aralkyl, alkyloxy, aryloxy, halogen or aralkyloxy; b= 2 or more; and Z= a segment of (1) a polyether of min. mol. wt. 2000 or (2) a polyester contg. polyether segments of min. mol. wt. 2000). Also claimed is the prepn. of nylon block copolymers by reacting a lactam monomer, a basic lactam polymerisation catalyst (pref. caprolactam Mg-chloride or -bromide) and the acyllactam functional material, pref. at 70-250, esp. 120-170 deg.C. The nylon block copolymers are e.g. those of the type described in US4031164 and 4223112. Their properties depend on the nature of Z and they can be prepd. in short reaction times giving materials useful in reaction injection moulding (RIM), in-mould casting, rotation moulding, resin transfer moulding and pultrusion moulding.
