AbstractAn improved large dynamic range multiplier is dis-closed that provides substantially ideal multiplicationfor signals within a maximal-ratio predetection diversitycombiner. Linear product multiplication is necessary inthe second mixing stage of the maximal-ratio predetectiondiversity combiner, where it is essential that the mixerproduct signal be proportional to the product of its inputsignals, which each have a dynamic range in excess of 40db. The multiplier, which in the preferred embodiment ofthe present invention is a field-effect-transistor device,provides a product signal that has a linear dynamic rangeapproaching 130 db, far in excess of the 80 db necessary toaccommodate typical input signals having a 40 db dynamicrange.
