METHOD FOR CUTTING AND SPLITTING TREE TRUNKS, AND AN APPARATUS FOR IMPLEMENTING THE METHOD

ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSUREA method for cutting and splitting tree trunks, preferably intofirewood, and an apparatus for implementing the method wherein both thecutting and the splitting are carried out in the same operation. One endof a tree trunk is placed on a foundation below two vertically-disposedknives, one of which extends across the width of the tree trunk and theother longitudinally along a portion of the length to be split. The knivesare mounted to move downwardly toward the foundation and upwardlyaway therefrom. On the downward movement one knife cuts a log from theend of the tree trunk and in the same operation the other knife splits thelog longitudinally. The knives are then moved upwardly and the remainingtree trunk is moved longitudinally endwise placing another end portion belowthe knives. The sequence is repeated until the log is cut up into splitfirewood. At least one knife member is guided as it is driven downwardlytoward and through the tree trunk.
