ABSTRACTAn improved method of operating an activatedbiomass process wherein influent and activated biomassare initially contacted under anaerobic conditions toform a mixed liquor, the mixed liquor is subsequentlyoxygenated, thereafter activated biomass is separatedfrom the mixed liquor and at least a portion of theseparated biomass is introduced into the initial contact-ing step. The improved method comprises maintainingboth the F/M ratio and the BOD/P ratio within particularranges, preferably relative to each other.
