ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSUREThere is disclosed a method for the preparation of a homogeneous,physically stable colloidal elemental iron dispersion of colloidal iron particleshaving a size in the range of from about 10 Angstrom units to about 200Angstrom units. The method comprises preparing a solution of an activepolymer in an inert solvent, and incrementally adding thereto an ironprecursor, at a temperature at which the iron precursor will become bound tothe active polymer and thermally decompose to produce elemental ironparticles, the process being carried out in an inert atmosphere. Suchdispersions may be used per se as catalysts, or may be used for the preparationof supported colloidal iron catalysts. The dispersions may also be used for thepreparation of ablative optical recording media, and for the preparation ofmagnetic xerographic developer materials.
