TRACK CIRCUIT PRINCIPLE WHEEL DETECTORABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSUREApparatus for detecting the presence and position ofindividual wheels or wheel-axles of railroad cars. The apparatusinvolves no moving parts and basically senses the presence of acar wheel by sensing a shunt current flowing through the carwheel-axle set. The apparatus or system includes a transmitterwhich develops a high frequency AC signal which is impressed acrossthe rails, and a sense or pick-up coil which is sensitive to thefields produced by currents flowing up through the radius of thewheel, whereas it is substantially unaffected by fields producedby the currents flowing in the rails.
