In order to achieve inexpensive and space-saving storage and / or time-saving transmission of white blocks as well as data representing text, graphic and / or gray image areas of print templates, it is a prerequisite that the differently structured print template areas mentioned are each optimally binary coded. In the proposed method, the print template (D) is scanned opto-electronically by a video system (V). The sample values obtained are digitized and stored. In several process steps, horizontal and vertical white blocks are searched for one after the other in the stored binary image. The binary image divided by horizontal white blocks and the binary image divided by vertical white blocks are logically combined to find white "frames" for the individual print template areas. Such areas framed in white are then subjected to a feature extraction in order to determine the type (text, graphic or gray image) of the area of the artwork.
