The oxidation of hydrazine (N2H4) with air catalysed by activated carbon to give nitrogen and water is carried out in a fluidised bed in which the granular activated carbon (2) is kept. The fluidised bed, which is constructed in a filtering basin (1) filled with the water to be purified, is produced by the stream of air required for the reaction, which is blown into the basin (1) in the bottom area (4). By passing the air from bottom to top and forming a fluidised bed, the efficiency of the oxidation reaction, which would very rapidly decrease if the air was passed through from top to bottom, is substantially increased. This decrease can be explained by channel formation in the catalyst material caused by large amounts of rising nitrogen. IMAGE
