A process for the preparation of block copolymers based on ethylene copolymers which contain, as a functional group, at least one acrylate, methacrylate, keto, aldehyde, nitrile, halogen, carboxylic anhydride, imino, epoxide or isocyanate group in copolymerised form, the ethylene copolymers being reacted in solution with living polymeric anions obtained from ethylenically unsaturated, anionically polymerisable monomers in the absence of air and moisture. The ethylene copolymers preferably contain alkyl acrylates or methacrylates, maleic anhydride, carbon monoxide or methyl vinyl ketone in copolymerised form; the solvent used is, in particular, an aromatic hydrocarbon or tetrahydrofuran; the living polymeric anions comprise 30 or more monomers which are ethylenically unsaturated, anionically polymerisable monomers, in particular styrene, butadiene, isoprene or a mixture of these monomers, and the reaction is expediently carried out at from 0 to 130 DEG C. The invention furthermore relates to block copolymers of the general formula [(An)i(Bl)k(Cm)j] where A = -CH2-CH2-, B is an ethylene-copolymerised monomer containing (meth)acrylate, keto, aldehyde, nitrile, halogen, anhydride, imino, epoxide or isocyanate groups or is carbon monoxide, C is one or more anionically polymerised monomers, n and m are integers greater than 30, and l, i, k and j are integers greater than or equal to 1. B is preferably an alkyl acrylate or methacrylate, maleic anhydride, carbon monoxide or methyl vinyl ketone, and C is a polymerised styrene, butadiene or isoprene or any desired copolymer of these monomers, and n = 200 to 8000, m = 100 to 4000, l = 1 to 1500, i = 1 to 5, k = 1 to 20 and j = 1 to 20. The block copolymers can be used as additives for thermoplastics or mineral oils or as hot melt contact adhesives.
