Polyitaconic acid threshold scale inhibitor

A method of threshold scale inhibition which comprises adding to water containing scale-forming impurities, such as seawater for desalination, an effective amount, preferably from about 0.5 to 10 parts per million, of polyitaconic acid having a weight average molecular weight of from about 500 to 2000.
