Novel butane compds. (I), where X is H or COR group, R1 is a C1-C4 alkyl or alkoxy group or a halogen, and n = 0,1, or 2, suppress nitrification over a prolonged period and can be included in fertilizer compsns. at=0.05% based on wt. of reduced N present or added to growth medium at 0.05-4000ppm by wt. Thus, -methyl-(2,2,2- trichloroethyl)benzyl alc. was prepd. by adding - (2,2,2trichloroethyl)phenyloxirane in ehter to a slurry of LiAlH4 in 300ml ether, then after 20 min. adding water. The product at 2ppm was 98% effective in decreasing the rate of nitrification of ammonim-N applied as urea to soil.
