Azetidines I [X = CH2, CHR, CR2(R = halo, alkyl, alkoxy); Y = CHR, CR2, CH CO2H; Z = CH2, CHR, CR2, CH CO2H were prepd. Thus, 4-methyl- 2-tetrahydrofuranone was brominated and treated with PhCH2OH to give BrCH2CHMeCHBrCo2H, which was treated with Ph2CHNH2 followed by hydrogenolysis, to give 3-methyl-2-carboxyazetidine derivatives. At 1000 ppm azetidine derivs. gave 69% inhibition of grain set in wheat.
