A method comprises magnetization of the controlled object with a pulsed magnetic field, reading-out the normal components of gradients of the residual field of that object in the zone of maximum value of the residual field, conversion of the read signals according to the logarithmic law, their summation and conversion of the obtained sum according to the antilogarithmic law. The device comprises magnetizing coils (2) and magnetosensitive pick-ups (4) which are connected through logarithmic converters (6) to an adder (7). The output of the adder (7) is connected through an antilogarithmic converter (8) to the output of the device.
