The system supports the cardiovascular circulation system and uses a signal from the heart fed to a magnetic valve (22). The latter controls the flow of fluid to a servo-assembly (24). A piston of the servo-assembly is connected to a piston (34) of a drive cylinder. One side of the latter is connected to a small, expansible bag (38) whilst the other side is connected to a larger, passive bag via a low pressure reservoir (48). The bags are contained within a hard housing which is placed over a patient's body part, e.g. his leg. The pressure in the bags moves up and down with the heart beat, thus applying positive and negative pressure externally to the body for the support of the circulatory system.
