The specimen is ignited and the combustion observed through the walls of the chimney. The gas mixture is preferably pre-heated before entering the chimney and the heating element 8 wound helically around the inner member 1 to provide a graded heating effect. The temperature in the inner tubular member can be monitored with a thermocouple.
