1514428 Starch binder composition for paper coating CHAMPION INTERNATIONAL CORP 21 April 1976 [5 May 1975] 16047/76 Heading C3U A non-proteinaceous binder composition for cast surface coating of paper comprises modified starch and two carboxylated styrene-butadiene latexes which differ in respect of type and/or amount of carboxylation. The preferred starches are ethylated, cationic or high amylopectin starches. The compositions generally contain an insoluble filler, an inorganic polyphosphate dispersant, an organic dispersant, an oleaginous release material and a pentaerythritol ester of rosin. The preferred composition comprises: 85 parts of CaCO3, 15 parts of coating clay, 0À5 parts of an inorganic polyphosphate dispersant, 0À7 parts of an organic dispersant, 3-5 parts of a modified starch, 6-8 parts of one of two carboxylate styrene-butadiene latexes and 5-12 parts of the other latex, 1À5 parts of oleaginous release agent, 1À0 part of the sodium pentaerythritol ester of rosin, the composition having a pH of 9À5-10 and a total solids of 55-60%.
