The illumination device is for use in the photographic examination of the retina. It has an objective lens system (12) which is attached in the region of the main observational beam path of the eye (13) under examination. An exposure production lens system (14) mounted in the main light path, is used to focus reflected light falling on the retina of the eye under examination (13) through the objective lens system (12) onto the surface of a photographic film (18). A light guide (20) is attached between the main observational ray path and an illumination ray path.
