The imaging device display received echo pulses as a t.v. line image. The patient is linearly scanned with the respective echo signals entered in a buffer store, with alternate line read-in and read-out. The ultrasonic applicator, the buffer store and the t.v. monitor system are all associated with a line scan control. This divides the screen by the number of t.v. lines required to display a complete ultrasonic scan line, with this number of lines modulated by the echo signal information, the remaining lines staying dark. On the following image frame the latter lines are modulated by the echo signal information, to provide a total image by cyclic alternation of the lines receiving the modulation signals.
