SYSTEM AND METHOD FOR EFFECTING ORTHOGONAL ROTATION OF THE SCAN DIRECTION OF A DIGITAL RASTER IMAGE REPRESENTATION

A digital raster image received either from a bus (16) or a document scanner is stored in file (42). When it is desired to rotate the direction of scan of the image, groups of the digits, each corresponding to an individual fixed-size area of the image are withdrawn from the file in sequence under the control of control unit (54). Each is then rotated by a rotate circuit in control unit (54) in conjunction with RAM (52) and then returned to its place in file (42) to re-build the image in its rotated form. If the data in file (42) is in compressed form, it is decompressed by circuit (50) before rotation and again compressed before return to file (42).
