The invention is based on a method for controlling movement in automatic finishing operations carried out on a zip fastener line with preset gradations in the finishing machine and/or in a finishing line. The length of the incoming zip fastener line is measured and the finishing operations are carried out in accordance with a predetermined zip fastener length and other predetermined parameters of production. In this process, apart from the length of the incoming zip fastener line, the actual number of coupling elements of the incoming zip fastener line is continuously measured and a linked control step is derived from the two measured values, which step takes the form of the ratio of the actual number of coupling elements to the length. The desired number of control steps associated with the predetermined zip fastener length is determined. The movement is controlled in accordance with this desired number and the length of the control steps. This ensures that movement can be controlled without further action in such a way that zip fasteners of a predetermined length can be manufactured, while fastener elements can always be precisely assigned to the tools of the finishing machine and/or the finishing line. As a result of this, additional components can also be mounted with precise allocation to the fastener elements. The finishing machine or finishing line can without further modification be set up for zip fasteners of different designs and different strengths, and can optionally finish zip fasteners of very different kinds. The subject-matter of the invention is also a device for implementing such a method. IMAGE
