In the case of chemisorption filters which contain layers of chemisorption compositions arranged on filter cloths, the filters had previously been cleaned intermittently. Fresh sorption composition was then applied to the filter cloths. If too thick a layer of the chemisorption composition had built up on a filter cloth, the layer thickness was reduced by actuating the cleaning mechanism, but it was impossible to prevent an involuntary effect on adjacent filter cloths. In the process according to the invention, cleaning is effected continuously during the entire chemisorption activity of the filter. This involves working with variable cycle frequencies as a function of the pressure difference before and after filtering.
