The use of aqueous latices of emulsion copolymers containing recurring acidic or protonatable groups in chain form which become water-soluble through salt formation at these groups and have been prepared by emulsion polymerisation of a disperse liquid monomer phase in a continuous aqueous liquid phase as flocculants for the treatment of industrial water, effluent, drinking water and the like, where the copolymer contains hydrophobic comonomers in amounts of 90 to 15 mol%.
