An insulating body of mineral wool consists essentially of a moulding form-stabilised by means of a cured synthetic resin binder and consisting of a mineral wool/fibre composite. In order to render such an insulating body, especially a pipe-insulating shell (1) of mineral wool (2), especially rock wool, suitable for high-temperature insulations at media temperatures of 500 DEG C and higher, without their use involving the risk of the binder present in the mineral fibre composite (2) igniting and destroying it, it is provided on at least one of its sides with agents (3) which release a fire-retarding protective gas under the action of temperature. To produce such an insulating body, after the mineral wool/fibre composite (2) has been treated with a synthetic resin binder, brought into the shape intended for the insulating body and, for fixing the shaping, has been subjected to a heat treatment by curing the synthetic resin binder, one or more agents (3) releasing a fire-retarding protective gas are applied to or incorporated in at least one of the surfaces of the moulding.
