The invention provides for the re-use of dusts formed in stainless steel production and having correspondingly high contents of valuable alloy elements. The dusts are first turned into lumps in a known manner, water and/or binder as well as carbon being added to them in a more than stoichiometric proportion. The lumps are then treated in the crude steel melt of an electric induction furnace at more than 1600 DEG C until a reduction of the metal oxides to their metals has taken place. Above all, this leads to the reduction of chromium and nickel. The molten alloyed-up steel can then be recycled as alloy element carrier to the stainless steel production.
