Folded newspapers (39) are inserted into cells (Z) of a star feeder by means of a first feed device (42). The newspaper part (39b) lying at the bottom is fixed by means of a clamping strip (32). After passing through the vertical plane (V), the non-fixed newspaper part (39a) drops from the fixed newspaper part (39b), as a result of which the newspaper (39) opens. By means of a second feed device (43), supplements (54) are inserted into the opened newspaper. The clamping strip (32) is then released from the newspaper. When reaching a delivery device (44), the newspaper is ejected by movement of the cell bottom (15). The device affords the advantage that thin newspapers can also be opened precisely in the centre. The fact that the newspaper part (39a) projects over the newspaper part (39b) is utilised for the central opening. The device can operate at high frequency so that two star feeders can process a stream of newspapers which is supplied from a modern rotary printing machine. IMAGE
