In this method of producing container bodies open on both sides, a sheet is bent in a tubular shape while forming an overlap at its marginal areas and is welded by a laser beam (L, LS) directed towards the overlap, which sheet is initially cut before the bending except for a small residual width (br). The residual connection is completely cut after the welding by a further laser beam (LT) acting in cycles. The further laser beam can either be taken directly from the laser source (29) or can be diverted from the welding beam (LS) by a semipermeable mirror (32). The apparatus for carrying out this method consists of a forming device (3) for bending the sheet and a welding arrangement (4) with a welding arm (19) which concentrates the laser beam (LS) intended for the welding on a focussed spot (34) in the overlapping area of the sheet.
