The invention relates to an electrical circuit breaker having a latching mechanism (4) for low-voltage switching apparatuses, which is particularly suitable as a motor protection circuit breaker. The circuit breaker has a toggle lever latching mechanism with ON and OFF push buttons (2, 3) which can move in opposite directions, a blocking slide (11) being provided, which interacts with the switching-on push button (2) and the switching lever (5) which supports the contact link (8) of the circuit breaker, which, in the switched-on state, engages laterally behind a latching tab (10) on the switching-on push button (2), transversely with respect to the operating direction (2a) of the push button, under the influence of a compression spring (20), and does not release the switching-on push button (2) until the moving contacts (1) together with the contact link (8) have moved back through a specific switching-off movement. The blocking slide (11), which can be displaced transversely with respect to the operating direction (2a) of the switching-on push button (2) against the spring force, results in a simpler construction and, in addition, a more precise method of operation than known designs.
