An illuminator is disclosed which comprises a gas discharge lamp (1) and two light deflecting mirrors (2, 3) advantageously focussing mirrors with a surface of ellipsoid of rotation which are arranged on one side of the lamp in such a way that their axes are parallel with the axis of the arc of the lamp, and the arc of the lamp is arranged outside the foci of the mirrors. The two virtual lamp arcs (8, 9) are thus projected by the two minors (2, 3) on either side of the arc of the lamp (1), advantageously at a same distance and in the same plane. IMAGE
