The apparatus is for cleaning bedpans etc, having a water tank above the washing chamber with a pump at its outlet supplying hot and cold water via nozzles for cleaning the items inserted in the chamber. One or more electrically-operated valves (10) are provided for filling the tank (7), and their opening periods are limited by a level switch (12). The pump (6), drawing in water from the tank outlet (8), delivers to the nozzles (4) via a washing pipe (5). This extends upwards from the pump in a loop to the maximum level of water in the tank, and to its highest point an air vent pipe (9) is connected. This in turn discharges into the tank above the maximum water level. There can be a metering device upstream of the nozzles, and which can be brought in and out of action, delivering chemical disinfectant.
