The sluice valve is for the sealed closure of a large dia pipe against the flow of liquids or gas. The sluice has a valve plate (8) which is displaced by screw jacks to cover the pipe cross-section (3), and is finally subjected to an oblique lateral displacement on to the valve seat (11). The valve plate is displaced by virtue of its mounting on two threaded sleeves (5) which traverse parallel threaded rods (2). The sleeves (7) are mounted in guide boxes (7), with inclined projections or runers locating in inclined slots or tracks in the box walls. The box (7) encounters a stop (10) when the valve plate (8) reaches its active position, and further rod rotation causes the plate (9) and box (7) to displace laterally and obliquely relative to the rod and the sleeve.
