Tower for degassing suspensions - having expanded metal baffles with inclined slits producing mixed phase without solids separation

A gas/liquid contact tower removes volatiles from liquid or suspensions, the tower contains base plates, each consisting of several plates and deflectors. The plates have a number of inclined portions plus slits, the latter serve to deflect the removal gas at an acute angle to the base plates and thus disperse at least part of the liquid or suspension which flows on to the plates. Gas/liquid or gas/solid/liquid phase is produced while the deflected gas accelerates the liquid flow, so preventing stagnation of the liquid or suspension at ay point on the base plate without weirs. Base plates are self-cleaning as solids do not separate out; the process is particularly suitable for stripping vinyl chloride monomer from PVC suspensions.
