Dynamic volume measurement of moving cylindrical workpieces - has longitudinal and radial spring measurement rollers feeding generators producing pulse chains which represent dynamic length and radius

A roughly cylindrical log (1), the diameter of which varies along its length, is fed past a saw (6) in a sawmill. A longitudinal measurement roller or wheel (2) and a radial measurement spring roller (4) feed simpler generators (8, 9) which produce pulse chains representing the dynamic length traversed and radius respectively. A second longitudinal transducer (11) and impulse generator (10) are situated beyond the saw (6), offset from the first set by a fixed known length (26). A number of gates, switches and a difference counter (19) are linked together with these generators and with a volume measurement network (12). This gives a dynamic reaing of the volume traversed by the log past the first transducer set (8, 9) taking into account any direction changes, and also taking into account the offset between the transducer sets.
