An equipment for deterring physical violence or assault consisting of a gas or spray release mechanism. It is operated electromagnetically to release a suitable gas or spray into a predetermined area, typically in a taxi or bank. A cylinder (10) containing a suitable gas or spray (12) is held by a clamp (11) and seal (14) at the bottom of the roughly cylinder shaped device (1). An electromagnet (5) mounted above the cylinder operates a piston valve (8) which releases the gas or spray (8) via a capillary outlet (13, 16) into a tube (R) which takes it to the protected area.
