Metal wires prodn. by hydrostatic extrusion from single workpiece - using die having longitudinally extending apertures and entry wall surfaces arranged to create cross-shear stresses
Apparatus for extruding a metal blank into two independent elongate products includes a die with two apertures each having an inlet opening in the entry wall. The latter wall includes two distinct entry surfaces, one adjacent to the second inlet and sloping past it towards the first inlet while the second entry surface is located conversely with regard to the inlets. The arrangement of the two surfaces is such that cross-shear stress is introduced into the metal as it flows along differing paths to the two inlets. In a modification, the principle is adapted to a multi-aperture die.
